How to Use Cervical Traction Unit
Instructions:
- Begin with cervical warm-up, joint lubrication, and cartilage nourishment exercises (twist, flex, and extend the head and neck).
- Adjust the connection so that the curved piece hangs slightly lower than the back of the head.
- Pull the handles down until they stop at the curved neck piece, with the handles at shoulder height.
- Place the curved piece behind the neck and position the padded handle under the chin or on the forehead. Place one hand on each handle end, with palms facing the face.
- Hold the handles firmly and relax your knees to support some of your body weight with the traction. The traction is controlled by bending your knees.
- Start with 10 repetitions and gradually increase to 60 repetitions per session.
- Incorporate deep diaphragmatic breathing with the traction, then exhale completely and forcefully when releasing the traction.
- If you experience any pain, ice the neck for 10 minutes.
- NOTE: Loop the rope through the strap. Place the door stop over the door and close it. You can extend the rope by adding extra rope (not included). For optimal results, your MaxLiving Doctor may suggest using this item in conjunction with other items in the Homecare Kit.
Exercise 1: Cervical Traction
- Position #1: “Thin” (converters furthest apart): This thin posterior position allows for a specific focus on the upper cervical spine during the Cervical Repetitive Traction. This is the roll thickness you’re accustomed to.
- Position #2: “Comfort” (converters about 1” apart): This position can be used as a comfort position to relieve pressure on the spinous processes for patients with sensitivity.
- Position #3: “Wide” (converters together in the center): This thick position allows for a more dispersed force in the cervical spine during Cervical Repetitive Traction for cases where ligament damage is suspected. This position simulates a wide/fat roll.
Exercise 2: Cervical Traction Pull
- Position #1: “Thin” (converters furthest apart): This position provides a focus on 2-3 vertebrae segments* during the Cervical Traction Pull. This is the roll thickness you’re accustomed to.
- Position #2: “Comfort” (converters about 1” apart): This position can be used as a comfort position to relieve pressure on the spinous processes for patients with sensitivity.
- Position #3: “Wide” (converters together in the center): This position allows for a wider focus on 4-5 vertebrae segments* during the Cervical Traction Pull. Use this position if you suspect ligament damage or want a broader area of focus. This position simulates a wide/fat roll.
*”Segment” refers to the specific spinal vertebra segment(s) being targeted during the exercise. Thin traction allows for a focused vertebral area, while wide traction allows for a broader vertebral area.
